About the Club
Shenzhen Toastmasters Club (深圳国际演讲俱乐部) was chartered on 8 September 2003. It was the first Toastmasters club in Shenzhen, and it has met almost every Tuesday since.
Professional, warm, fun
Those three words are how the club describes itself, and they are in that order for a reason.
Professional. Meetings start on time and follow a printed agenda down to the minute. Roles are assigned in advance. A timer keeps every speech honest. After 1,000 meetings the machinery runs itself.
Warm. Almost every meeting has a first-time guest, and the room notices. Evaluations are direct about what could be better, and generous about what worked.
Fun. Meeting themes have included Sherlock, “Unfortunately, but fortunately”, and the 2026 World Cup. Dinner afterwards is not officially part of the agenda, but it may as well be.
Who comes
Members work in tech, finance, foreign trade, education and consulting. Some are native English speakers, most are not. Ages range widely. The mix is the point: you learn to speak to an unfamiliar audience by having one every week.
How the club is run
Seven officers are elected every six months:
- President — runs the club
- VP Education — the meeting schedule and members’ progress through Pathways
- VP Membership — guests and new members
- VP Public Relations — telling people we exist
- Secretary — records
- Treasurer — dues
- Sergeant at Arms — the room and the equipment
Taking an officer role is one of the more useful things you can do here. It is a real job with a real handover, on a six-month term, with a club that will forgive your mistakes.
Meeting roles
Beyond speaking, every meeting is staffed by members:
- Toastmaster of the Evening hosts the meeting
- Table Topics Master runs the impromptu round
- General Evaluator evaluates the meeting itself
- Timer, Grammarian, Ah-counter, Hark Master track the details and report at the end
Guests are welcome to try any of these once they have been a couple of times.
